OpenStudy (amistre64):

how doe we find the area of a circle?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

that e felt lonely so i had to use it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please help me this math question is due 2 weeks ago so...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

define what you mean by "help"

OpenStudy (amistre64):

your figure is has a surface comprised of a circle for the top another circle for the bottom and in essense, a rectangle for the sides

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the width of the rectangle is the same as the distance around the circles; soo area of circle + area of sircle + cirumference of circle times height

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it was cylinder!!!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

right, a circle up top; a circle on the bottom; and the rectangle that wraps around the middle ... creates a cylindar

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good luck then ....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1334779490603:dw| try this... this is called a net of the cylinder... do you see the rectangle now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i just need like 2*3.14*?*?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, that's what he was trying to explain to you. this whole thing is a process of getting the answer... you'll have to know what tools (formulas) to use to solve this problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but rectangle doesn't have number of width or hieght

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1334779833137:dw| have you ever opened up a soup can before? when you take the lid off, that lid is a circle. if you take the bottom off that too is a circle. now if we take the rest of the can and cut it along the dotted line as shown and opened it up and laid it flat, the shape would be a rectangle... so to find the surface area of the cylinder, you'll need the area of the two circles and add to the area of the rectangle.
