Why did japan attack pearl harbor in the first place?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sososo sorry... ive been trying to answer for like 3 minutes but my computer is well... bleh. ANYWAYS. Japan was in the midst of conquering regions on the Eastern tips of Russia, areas of Korea, and Eastern China during the tail end of WWII. It was militarily superior to its foes; however, the only one that was formidable was the US. The US, in response to Japanese attacks on Russia, China etc placed embargos on trade of scrap iron to Japan. Japan is a small island and thus does not generate very many resources... So in order to preemptively prevent the US from interfering any more (they feared US military involvement in the Pacific sooner or later), the Japanese launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor to cripple the US western fleet. They succeeded. However, they did not anticipate the speed with which the US would rebuild.
