Biology 8 Online
OpenStudy (anonymous):

not about biology but how long to you stay in high school for and do GCSEs count in America? (may be moving from England)

OpenStudy (blues):

In the States, high school goes from age 14 (age in fall of start) to 18 (age in spring at graduation). It covers grades 9 or freshman to 12 or senior. I don't know whether GCSEs count or not; it might depend on the individual school district. When I moved from England to America at age of 12, they put me in high school as a freshman that year and aside from having a wretched accent it was fine. Essentially the English schools are two years ahead of the American ones in terms of content and intellectual level.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as you finish high school at 18 do you still go to college? and what age do you start university? (sorry for all the questions)

OpenStudy (blues):

Exactly, you can start college once you have left high school. So you finish high school at 18 and start college the next fall at 18 or 19. Some go straight on, others take some time off between, some don't go on at all.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you have to go to college before university?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

College is the equivalent of University if i understood American educational system properly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

exuras so do you mean college and university are the same thing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Both are the same level of education, but offers a different variety of courses, programs. But essentially you're eligeble for both after highschool.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much :)

OpenStudy (blues):

Not a prob, best of luck to you . :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@blues and @exuras covered it all very nicely; just want to add on to what exuras said - the term college and university are essentially the same, though (at least where I live) we typically just refer to it as "college" in everyday speech. But - in junction with an institution's name, they are not interchangeable. For example, you have Cornell College and Cornell University - two very, very different institutions. As mentioned, you could attend either one after high school (assuming you get in).

quick question i have been completing the duke of Edinburgh award over here and was wondering if the D of E is recognised in America or not?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

From what I gather...it seems to be akin to a high rank in the Boy/Girl Scouts? If you're looking at this from a college application viewpoint, it would certainly be viewed favorably (is that what you mean?)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes that is what I mean. thank you.
