What is the slope of the line passing through the point (4, −2) and perpendicular to the line y = 4x + 2? Write your answer as a fraction.

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

@louis234 What is the SLOPE of the line we are looking for? HINT: It must be perpendicular to the line y = 4x+2

OpenStudy (rulnick):

Slope perpendicular to slope m is -1/m. Your slope is 4, so the perpendicular slope is ... ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4

OpenStudy (rulnick):

Well, no. Watch the sign. It's -1/m, where m=4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1/m means that you will flip and change the sign... when you are given 4 you also have 4/1 so the flip of that would be..?

OpenStudy (rulnick):

A line y=4x+2 has slope m=4. All perpendicular lines to lines with slope m have slope -1/m. So ... any questions?
