What were the main factors that caused immigration to the united states during 1870-1900?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well the job opportunities with the new manufacturing boom were definitely a source for drawing in immigrants. Also there was turmoil in other countries. In the mid 1840s, the Irish Potato famine struck, causing thousands of Irish immigrants to seek economic solace in the United States. The production of railroads, westward expansion, and creation of new cities drew people to the vision of being part of the "American Dream".

Did that help?

to that you can also add that people were being controled by the Roman Catholic Church of England so they wanted to practice their religion or just be free from the Church and that was another cause of why so many immigrated in addition to what wombat said...

oh and also because America was beeing tagged as the place to have/own your own land and many people wanted that becuase in England or other European countries they could achieve this dream..soo hope this helps you

Capitalists needed workers, that simple. IF capitalists needed workers today, immigration would be encouraged and very legal. Now they just go where the cheaper labor is. Global capitalism

@cos00155079 is totally right. Europe was still suffering from some issues in which freedom of religion was iffy. To worship your own religion without persecution, you would try to travel to the US (if you were immigrating).
