Protozoa are a type of microbe. They are unicellular and eukaryotic as mud116 mentioned. There have been very few positive commercial uses for protozoa, but they are known to cause diseases like malaria.

It's very important to provide citations! @mud116 's source above is not stated, but was cut and pasted from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protozoa To add to that basic definition, and @pratu043 's example of a well-studied protozoa: Malaria, I would add that protozoa are extremely useful in veterinary medicine. Protozoa help cattle and ruminant animals digest their food! They are critical and a cow without protozoa quickly dies unless she can be provided with new, healthy protozoa, a process called transfaunation.
