Heat left over from the Big Bang, also known as cosmic microwave background radiation, offers scientists a view into the past because as heat travels great distances, we are really seeing into the past. radiation directly corresponds to the number of stars in the universe. remnant heat can be measured and causes the temperature of the stars in a certain galaxy. temperature is related to the gas that was present in the early universe.

The last is the least wrong, I'd say. In fact, the average temperature is just related to the age of the universe, it's no more than the usual red-shift effect. But deviations from the average temperature do indeed tell us something about the early universe.
