Need help with fractions
Five eights of the students in Mr. Halls class got an A or a B. Four times as many students go an A than got a B. What fraction of Mr. Hall's class got an A?
I really don't know an easier way, but this is what I did: We don't really know exactly how many students there are in Mr. Halls class. So I played with the numbers a little. Whatever we choose, we must have in mind that there must be 4Xmore A's than B's. and when added up, the number of individuals who got A's and B's must total a ratio of 5/8 I got lucky on the first attempt you can say. I doubled up the ration giving me 10/16.. if we simply this we still have 5/8. if there were 2 B's, then that means there are 8 A's. 2+8=10 so we have 10/16 students got A's and B's which simplified once again 5/8
Thanks juan_9292...seems since we are dealing with fractions at the end of the day then we could say 50 out of 80 students have As and Bs. Of the 50 there are 4 times more As than Bs so 40 would have As and 10 would have Bs. So 40 out of the original 80 students is 50% or 1/2 have As out of the whole class. Thanks for steering me in the right direction.
No problem :)
