OpenStudy (anonymous):

I must do an experiment or demonstration for my class proving that when oil and vinegar separate after being mixed it is caused by a physical reaction not a chemical one. Any tests which can easily prove this point?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mix them in a beaker and after awhile, they will separate. The separation is due to differing densities, which is a physical property. Thus, the reaction can be said to be a physical reaction. You can further explain that it is a physical reaction because of how evidence of a chemical reaction is nonexistent.

OpenStudy (mos1635):

you can also demostrate that each element conserves its properties

OpenStudy (jfraser):

once the mixture has been shaken and returns to its original layers, pipet out some of the vinegar and mix in some baking soda, to prove that the vinegar is still vinegar
