OpenStudy (albert0898):

Thanks for posting your problem! ~To find the factored form of this, first find the factors of -10. The Factors of -10 are: -5, 2 -2, 5 -10, 1 10, -1 ~Now, which pair of these factors will add up to get a sum of Positive 3 Well look, 5 + -2 is the same as 5 - 2, which equals to 3. Now since a goes to the second power you must do the following... (a +- ?) (a +- ?) Now look back at the pair of factors you had gotten. The pair is both negative and positive; now input the pair into those parentheses. It simplifies to (a + 5) (a - 2) Check Your Work! -Distribute (a + 5) into (a - 2) \[a ^{2} -2a + 5a - 10\] Combine like terms.
