OpenStudy (anonymous):

i didnt do that.....i swear i didnt

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its been doing that o all my questions. i didnt do it i swear!!

OpenStudy (sh3lsh):

well 3, that's a prime number, ergo there is only one thing that can go in the first blanks. 3 and 1. do you see the signs, both of them are addition. Therefore, it HAS to be to addition signs. we have this now (3x + ?)(x+?) lets look at the last term. 10? hmmm. lets try numbers! What multiplies to give us a 10? well 5 and 2 works! lets see if that fits. (3x+5)(x+2) this gives us 3x^2 +5x+6x+10 mehh. This isn't what we want! lets try re-arranging the 5 and 2! (3x+2)(x+5) 3x^2+2x+15x+10 this gives us 17x in the middle. This is what we want.

okay can you show me with out all the words? that just confuses me even more...

OpenStudy (sh3lsh):

just read it as if someone's talking to you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i understand that the two factors are...just dont understand that...i need visual not words..

OpenStudy (sh3lsh):

do you know how i got the 3? and the addition signs?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No not really...urg thanks for the help...ill try working it out by myself,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont under stand words better then i understand visuals. the words confused me even more. Im lost and dont know how you got anything

OpenStudy (sh3lsh):

we got the 3 by this. 3 is prime no other number can be 3 only 3 and 1 so first two numbers are 3 and 1. (3x)(x) there are all addition signs, so everything has addition signs. (3x + ?) (x+ ?) 10? what are the factors? 5*2, 2*5, 1*10, 10*1 (this is what multiplies to get 10) try these numbers as the last number in each parenthesis. (3x + 5) (x + 2) Huh? this doesn't work (3x + 2) (x + 5) Yes! this does work. You could do (3x + 1) (3x+ 10) but we've already found the answer. This is the guess and check method. Ask your teacher about "some method where you multiply the 3, by 10" (Show him/her this problem)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 + 5 does not = 17 so thats wrong

OpenStudy (sh3lsh):

FOIL? first outer inner last?
