The item used was a shroud. Specifically, Penelope for three years weaved the shroud each day, but at night undid her work, in order to lengthen the time she had been given to complete it. She had been allowed to complete the shroud, but knew that she would be married to a person of her father's choosing, upon completion of her work. Hence, the reasoning for her 'fooling' the suitors.

Her actions reflect her clever and mischievous ways.
