what was the importance of Constantinople
It was named Constantinople by Roman emperor Constantine in his times, it has been capital under Greek period, it was known as Byzantinum, and in the times of Ottoman Empire, it was renamed as "Istanbul", currently is the capital of the republic of Turkey.
It lies at a natural junction of trading routes, since you can travel down the Black Sea coasts of Europe and Asia to get there, and up the Aegean Sea coasts of Greece and Asia Minor to get there, and also down the Danube, which drains much of inland Europe. This area of the world has been a natural trading junction for all of recorded history, because of the confluence of natural water routes. As such, the area in and around Constantinople has often been the power center of Empires, including the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman.
