what chemical element is in dye?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I really think that depends on the color you are looking for, and also the people that make it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well were dying t shirts in dance and we need to know what chemical element is made of or we fail the test!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know who makes the dye? maybe we can figure it out from there.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i have no idea ll she did was held up a plastic bag with powder and said when u add water it becomes die what element from the periodic table is most likely in this? \

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigo_dye read this see if it helps

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

most dyes contain a chemical with a chromophore, a chromophore are usually resonance structures in molecules.

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

these chromophores absorb photons at specific wavelengths which due to the absence of that wavelength form a colour that is observable. Dyes are usually made of organic compounds, although some inorganic compounds can be used as dyes.

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Note that the wavelengths it absorbs would have to be in the visible spectrum which is roughly from 300nm to 700nm

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Also the wavelengths the chromophore reflects is also what dictates the colour of a compound
