my 8th grader is having trouble with pre-algebra and I don't know how to explain this to him Is each relation a function? Explain. 1. {(–2, –1), (4, 2), (–8, –4), (6, 3)}

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

a function -> look at the x coordinates..if a number repeats it's not a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if there is two different y-values paired with the same x-coordinate, it is not a function.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we are still confused can you please give us an example

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

{(2,1),(1,3), (3,2), (4, 5)} isa function because the x coordinates did not repeat..the x-coordinates are the first numbers of every group

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

in the set i gave the x coordinates are 2, 1, 3, 4, and 5...nonne of which repeated so it is a function

ok thank you so much! I completly understand now! Im not good at math and my husband who loves it is in Afghanistan right now!!
