The diagram shows an 8-foot ladder leaning against a wall. The ladder makes a 53 angle with the wall. Which is closest to the distance up the wall the ladder reaches?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Adjacent side, Opposite side, Hypotenuse. Could you point out which of those sides is which?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c is what i get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cause it would be 8Sin(53

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sin, eh? Yousure?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pretty sure...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the opposite side is the one with the question mark, the side with the 8 is the Hypotenuse, and the Adjacent side is the one on the bottom. right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep, I am right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, thanks robby

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The 8 is definitely the hypotenuse. Adjacent means next to, and we're talking about the angle we know, which is 53. So the adjacent side is actually the one with the question mark. The wall.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol, you're both wrong. That's cool though.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whaa?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol ok at least i got the Hypo right :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is cos?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. The hypotenuse is 8, and the side we're trying to figure out is the adjacent side. So which trig function uses adjacent and hypotenuse? That's the one we want.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that tan?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no....its wrong huh...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cos

OpenStudy (anonymous):

adj/hop

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Tangent is Opposite/Adjacent. Sin is Opposite/Hypotenuse. Cos is Adjacent/Hypotenuse.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks, i always get those mixed up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so we picked out Cos. Now, let's write something like: Cos(53) = A/H Cos(53) = A/8 Solve for A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

brilliant

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did cos(53) and got 0.6018... is that right so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is 8Cos(53)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes =) So now your equation says 0.6018 = A/8 because you did cos(53)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiply both sides of "Cos(53) = A/8" by 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it's 4.8?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

coolio! thanks john, now ik how to do it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and thanks doom :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u guys r a big help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My pleasure =D
