PLEASE HELP SUPER SLOW COMPUTER!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My computer is REALLY slow. I have tried everything heres a list of a few: downloaded AVG pc tuneup, defragment several times, disk cleanup several time, set to windows classic theme, uninstalled all but basic programs, tried readyboost with 4gb flashdrive, moved all pictures and media to flash drives, updated to service pack 2, constantly update. I have a Windows Vista Dell inspiron 531S with an AMD Athlon 64 dual core +3800 2.01 ghz processor, but I only have 1 gb of RAM but only 957mb are usable. I just started using readyboost with a 4gb flashdrive. What should I set the minimum and maximum virtual memory at? Will changing the virtual memory help speed up my computer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How much free memory do you have without starting any programs? Have you checked Start->run: msconfig and disabled any unnecessary programs from starting at boot?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Virtual memory is going to run very slow compared to hardware memory

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

First of all, use readyboost. Second of all, you sure you haven't got any nasty viruses?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have disabled all unnecessary programs from start-up. I know that virtual memory will run slower but my RAM just needs a small boost. I already use readyboost on a 4gb flashdrive. I do not have any viruses either. I just want to know what numbers to set the minimum and maximum to.

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

just set it to the recommended amount.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need it to have a higher maximum and lower minimum because on the performance moniter the memory chart is spiking off the scale.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well then just experiment a little to find what works better

OpenStudy (anonymous):

changing the virtual memory will not help speed up your computer...vitrual memory is 1.5 times bigger than ur installed ram..... a paging file does nothing more than create sudo memory so that ur computer can run more programs.....want to speed up your computer then get a computer with 16 gigs of ram and remove the paging file. The more IO writes you have on a regular non SSD harddrive the more your programs have to wait their turn to use the HD. You can remove the paging file with 1gig of ram the most that will happen if u use all the ram is a system warning and maybe a shutdown. Your computer will recover after such shut down but if you working on some custom text/file then your data might be lost....As always save and back up all your important files often --calmchessplayer

I would recomend a RAM upgrade. Try to uprade to 2 GB, if possible.

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

But, your RAM is most likely DDR2, and is actually probably more expensive than newer RAM. My actual suggestion would be to get a newer system; sometimes that's the best solution :S

This is actually my grandparents computer and they really had no idea what to buy when they bought it next time I will go with them so they will not chose a terrible computer.

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

I don't think this computer is terrible, it's just old.
