How has GNU/Linux failed as a desktop OS?
Technically, it hasn't. The configuration hasn't been idiotproofed enough for the masses. The multimedia hasn't been tied into non-GNU programs to auto configure. Competitively, more commercial software has to run on it. The ability to run multiple instances of the same program really upsets commercial software developers, they want a license fee for each instance. The advantage of open source continuously incrementally updating is kind of a moving target for commercial software development.
Linux is not an entertainment O/S it is a server/productivity O/S .....I believe when it was developed we didn't have allot of entertainment apps around so if you focus on apps that were designed for your version of Linux ....kernel, file dependencies for the apps. Then u won't have a problem.....Linux is not made for the common person/ businesses that don't like to waste times in front of a terminal....use Windows and Apple devices. So Linux since its not very user friendly users that don't want to spend mass amounts of time using it then the less time consuming Windows / Apple Devices are much more attractive. Personally I only use Linux for Server, Android for Mobile, Windows for text editor, business productivity gaming and movies. I have an Apple iPod touch that I like to read e-books and other stuff on but I use Android for business because i like all the features and programming for it is a challenge. From what I've read Objective-C is easier than fragmented android JAVA/ Android SDK....But I don't plan to develop any apps for Apple/IOS or Mac because I can't afford a MAC. I tried to get apple to give me one but they declined. I offered to make some apps for them in exchange and they told me to write a letter to the corporate headquarters. I suspect they were trying to get rid of me. U would think $600 billion dollar apple would give me a Mac for which I completely intend and have the reputation to use, support, and develop software for their devices. I have a feeling Apple has become too rich and greedy and have lost site of the core goal of its founders and engineers. As others now suspect I think Apple has lost allot of its marketing spirit with the loss of Steve Jobs and will rapidly decline int the next 2-4 years --calmchessplayer
