That is 9th grade geometry. (at least for me it was)

It allows you to calculate the area of any triangle if you know the side lengths.

If you're expected to find the area with a different method, I would try using pythagorean's theorem.|dw:1335648556063:dw|Find the total area, and subtract the area of the small black triangle.
