the line passing through (2,b) and (4,6) is parallel to the line joining (1,4) and (-1,7). Find b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not sure if i'm right . I came up with -3/-8 after working it out

OpenStudy (accessdenied):

If you plug it back into the slope for that line, you should get the same slope as of (1,4) - (-1,7).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 3 over -2

OpenStudy (accessdenied):

Although, to save the trouble, I do not think that 3/8 is correct. Yeah, the slopes should both be 3/-2 (or -3/2. same thing)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (accessdenied):

Could you show your work? That'd help identify what you did wrong. The basic idea is to find the expression for the slope of the line with the 'b' and set it equal to -3/2 to solve for b.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah
