how is probability defined?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you mean?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i mean, in order to understand how to get an answer; you first must know how a probability is defined. Since the answers are just the result of the definition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, it's just the possibility that a certain event can occur. i just don't know how to do this one because there are 3 children and I am confused. At first I counted all the girls and divided it by 24 and got 1/3 but it said it was wrong cause I wasn't counting it right with just ONE girl total.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

well, you got a rudimentary idea; lets refine it probability is defined as: (what we are looking for) divided by (all the possible outcomes)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

how many possible outcomes does the table give us? in other words, how many rows are in the table?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean, 8

OpenStudy (amistre64):

lol, ill go with 8 :) so, count how many outcomes we want that show up, and divide that by 8 for example: how many rows have exactly 1 girl?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh okay, so if 3 rows have 1 girl, then i would do 3/8?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yes how many rows have exactly 0 girls?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/8 and then the 3rd one is 3/8. Thank you soooo much!!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yep, good luck ;)
