what is the proper time and place to use op. cit.?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is used in the footnotes right? This is used to refer to a repeated footnote... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Op._cit. ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you using footnotes within your paper?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, just a works cited page. is it just used in footnotes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

....op. cit and works cited page are two different things.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you asking when you should use a works cited page?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahhh. thank you very much. i've been looking all over purdue owl in research papers for ibid and op. cit. Now i know why i couldn't find it. thankyou, thankyou, thankyou!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ibid and op. cit. are only used in footnotes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, i'm using a works cited page as per my professor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

great. are you all set with works cited pages?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have only one cited work on this paper, and didn't know how to do the citation for the seqential pages

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for in text citations or for works cited citations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

both

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So i'll be using Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe for these examples... For in text citations: When the paper first introduces the source, the paper would use the page number and the source. Example: At the end of this feast, an old man preaches, “An abominable religion has settled among you. A man can now leave his father and his brothers. He can curse the gods of his fathers and his ancestors, like a hunter’s dog that suddenly goes mad and turns on his master” (Achebe 167). When the paper uses the same source again, the paper can omit the author's name only. Example: As Mr. Smith enters Umuofia, he rejects the idea of an ogbanje, a changeling: “such stories were spread in the world by the Devil to lead men astray” (185). For works cited, the paper does not need to repeat the same works cited source. Works Cited Achebe, Chinua. Things Fall Apart. New York: Anchor Books, 1994. Print. this is the end of my essay for one of my classes. As you can see, I didn't need to repeat the citation. You only need this once.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, so in the works cited you don't have to put the page nmbers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it actually depends on your citation guidelines, and your medium. Are you using MLA?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, I'm using MLA, and my source is my textbook.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are so nice to take your time out to help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need to go log off now. Bye.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bye.
