7+y=2y plz help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Subtract y from both sides. Then what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nice wombat^ he is right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just started this i am going to fail if i dont get it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wat do u mean

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. Well when you see something like "2y" this means that there are two y's. So you can treat "2y" as "y+y" because there are two y's in "y+y". Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea so how do get a number out of letters

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well pretend each y is a finger on your hand. When you have two of them, instead of representing it as "y+y", you can write "2y", which is shorter to write as you progress.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so wat do u do next

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if you have: 7 + y = 2y you can rewrite it as 7 + y = y + y then you can subtract. What you do to one side of the equation must be done to the other to keep the statement true. So we are going to subtract y from both sides: 7 + y = y + y - y - y and you end up with 7 = y
