true or false? https://media.glynlyon.com/a_matalg02_2011/6/t5.gif

OpenStudy (anonymous):

False. say y = x + 2. Then that reads, y^2 = 49. y = 7 works, but y = -7 does as well, and the problem doesn't include -7 so the answer is false.

thanks! how about this: If x2 - 6x + 8 = 0, then x - 4 = 0 or x - 2 = 0.

Do you know how to factor things like that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, x^2 - 6x + 8 = (x - 4)(x - 2) = 0 (multiply it out and see for yourself). By the zero product property, which says if two numbers multiply to zero then one of them is zero, x - 4 = 0 and x - 2 = 0 are both valid statements.
