IUPAC name for:

|dw:1336154299818:dw|

Does the ring take preference over finding the longest carbon chain? If not, my best guess is: 1,4-diethyl-2-ethylcyclohexane

OpenStudy (jfraser):

1,4-dimethyl, not diethyl. The 1,4 chains are only 1-carbon long, but the rest is ok.

what you should do is make the total number be the smallest since there is no other function group. JFraser's answer is right, though I just thought it was a typing mistake. ^^

Since the rule is to give the preference to the group which is alphabetically first,it should be|dw:1336240175060:dw| 1-ethyl-2,5-diethylcyclohexane..... is it right???? @JFraser

OpenStudy (jfraser):

@Sarkar I usually number so that the functional groups get the lowest set of numbers as possible, so I would go clockwise from where you have #2, getting 1,4-dimethyl-2-ethyl, but IUPAC is crazy that way. When I took organic, the prof would accept just about any name, so long as it was, as he called it, "unambiguous". I figure that both systems would work, and an organic chemist would know what you were describing if you used either of these 2 options.
