Can someone explain one path carbon can take through the environment?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure! Why don't you take a look at this picture? http://eo.ucar.edu/kids/green/images/carboncycle.jpg Let's start with a carbon dioxide molecule in the air. As you can see, through photosynthesis, the carbon is incorporated into the plant as sugar, which the plant uses. Now, let's say disaster strikes and the plant dies. Through organisms such as bacteria and fungi, our plant is broken down, and the carbon compound is buried deep underground. After millions of years of heat and compaction, the carbon compound has turned into coal. Humans unearth this coal and burn it, releasing carbon back into the atmosphere and generating energy for themselves. Does this help?
