factor completely: 100x^2-90x+20

OpenStudy (espex):

Might I suggest you start by factoring out '10' from each term and then factoring the rest into their terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i pull out the 10

OpenStudy (espex):

Your last term, 10 * 10 does not equal 20. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldn't that be 10 (10x2-9x+2)?

OpenStudy (espex):

Now what are your factors of 10x^2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pull out the 2?

OpenStudy (espex):

No, you can't pull anything more out because none of it is a factor of 9.

OpenStudy (espex):

What do you need to multiply together to get x^2? What do you need to multiply together to get 10?

OpenStudy (espex):

Okay, for x^2 you can only have x, x for 10 you can have 1, 10 or 2,5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 and 5

OpenStudy (espex):

Good, so I would suggest that you write the factors like this: (5x )(2x ) Now what would you need to get your last term of 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 and 2

OpenStudy (espex):

Plug them in and see if it works back out to 10x^2+9x+2. :)

OpenStudy (espex):

Keep in mind that you will be multiplying your 5 by one of those numbers and you do not want it to be more than 9.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think i messed up somewhere

OpenStudy (espex):

What did you end up with?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 at the end not 20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh now I see it..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you!

OpenStudy (espex):

:) You're welcome.
