How do you name this molecule?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the molecule?

OpenStudy (calculator):

|dw:1336357427248:dw|

OpenStudy (4n1m0s1ty):

First, identify the longest carbon chain, here it would be the 6-carbon link so it is hexane. Second, identify the side groups and their location. we number the locations starting from the end with the side group closest to it. The side chain is iso-propyl and it is located on carbon 3. So the full name is 3-isopropylhexane. The chain and side-chain names you just have to memorize, no other way around that.

OpenStudy (jfraser):

there is also a different 6-carbon chain that starts at the "bottom" of the molecule, and a name of 2-methyl-3-ethylhexane is also appropriate.

OpenStudy (calculator):

Yeah i was gonna point out that this molecule has 2 names!

OpenStudy (jfraser):

organic chemistry has a boatload of naming rules, most of them conflict with each other in one way or another. When I took organic in college, my professor would accept any name, so long as it was "clear and unambiguous"
