Jim began a 153-mile bicycle trip to build up stamina for a triathlete competition. Unfortunately, his bicycle chair broke, so he finished the trip walking. The whole trip took 6 hours. If Jim walks at a rate of 3 mph and rides at 33 mph, find the amount of time he spent on the bicycle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we have the distance and the velocity split ups

OpenStudy (anonymous):

say rode for x miles then he walked for 153-x miles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

total time taken would be (x/33)+((153-x)/3) that is given to be 6 hours so find x then use it to find the time taken

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the equation would be x/33+153-x/33=6? and I just solve for x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep solving for x gives you the distance he rode then time can be calculated from t=distance/velocity=x/33

Ok Thanks a billion <3
