charlie has x state quarters . Ty has 3 more quarters than charlie has. Vinnie has 2 times as many quarters as Ty has.write and simplify an expression to show how many state quarters they have in all

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

x=number of state quarters Charlie has Ty has 3 more quarters than Charlie has. How would you write that expression in terms of x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk that whyyou have to answer it

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Look at the words and translate into mathematics Ty has 3 more quarters than Charlie has....If Charlie has x then Ty has x+3, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Vinnie has 2 times as many quarters as Ty has. Okay, how do we interpret this? Vinnie has 2 times as many as Ty and Ty has x+3 so what would the expression be for the number of quarters Vinnie has?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x+3)2

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Yes! So how many quarters do Charlie, Ty and Vinnie have all together?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

18

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

How did you get 18?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x2=6 so 6+3 is 9x2=18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just tell me the answer bro

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Well, I don't think we can solve directly for the number of quarters they each have but we can write a general equation for the total number of quarters = no of quarters Charlie, Ty and Vinnie have. T=x +(x+3) +2(x+3) Can you simplify this equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thx

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

you're welcome but you should simplify the equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x+9

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

yep
