The theory goes that all organisms must reproduce to propagate their species and their genes. However, the environment has limited resources such as nutrients, space, etc. and threats such as disease. Therefore there is a struggle for survival. The organisms with the most successful adaptations to survive in their given environment flourish, survive and are able to reproduce and pass on their genes. Less well adapted organisms fail to compete successfully in the population and are unable to survive or find a mate and perish without passing on their genes. Through countless generations of this, the best genes in the population are selected and become more abundant. In time this causes a species to evolve and to become better adapted to its environment.
