Another word for what I think you are *probably* talking about is "Alteration of generations." It is when the gametes or haploid phase of the life cycle has a distinct form than the diploid phase of the life cycle. An example would be jelly fish. They have a diploid bottom dwelling form called polyps and a haploid free swimming form called a medusa.
