what did you get?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I don't know how to get it because I don't know what the radius is
OpenStudy (anonymous):
then you'll need to solve this equation for x:
(12+x)^2 = 16^2 + x^2 this is the pythagorean theorem...
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I did that and I got x = 0?

FG and DG are both radii
Since FG = x and all radii of the same circle are equal, this means that DG = x
So DG^2 + ED^2 = EG^2
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
DG^2 + ED^2 = EG^2
x^2 + 16^2 = (12+x)^2
x^2 + 256 = 144+24x+x^2
0 = 144+24x+x^2-x^2-256
0 = 24x-112
112 = 24x
112/24 = x
14/3 = x
x = 14/3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x^2 + 256 = 144+24x+x^2
What is this?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Where did that 24 come from?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
(12+x)^2
(12+x)(12+x)
12*12 + 12x + 12x + x*x ... I'm using the FOIL rule here to expand
144 + 24x + x^2
So (12+x)^2 = 144 + 24x + x^2

Oh! I forgot about FOIL! Thank you again haha!
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
lol that's ok, there's a lot to forget math so no worries
