classify -3x^5-2x^3 by degree and number of terms classify -7x^5-6x^4+4x^3 by degree and number of terms

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Do you know what a "term" is? (this is really important to understanding & answering the problem). :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i do not.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you please explain this to me?

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

A "term" is basically "a number times x raised to a power". The number can be positive or negative. so... -3x^2 is a term 5x^6 is a term x^9 is a term (the number is just 1, so we don't write it)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok...

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

The "degree" is "the number to which x is raised" so the degree of -3x^2 is 2 5x^6 is 6 x^9 is 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhhhhh okay...

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

So like, random example: -2x^5 + 2x^3 -6x That has three TERMS and the highest DEGREE is 6 So it's a "third degree TRInomial" (tri just means three).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So are the variables considered TERMS?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And the numbers considered DEGREES?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

classify -3x^5-2x^3 by degree and number of terms Degree means the highest power of all terms given in the expression here we see that the highest power of variable is 5 so degree = 5 and number of terms = 2 classify -7x^5-6x^4+4x^3 by degree and number of terms Here degree = 5 and number of terms = 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So that means it is classified as a quintic binomial?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is quintic ?? never heard of that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@geniusy_2006 it is a binomial with 2 values in it

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

quintic means the highest power = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

depends on terms - 1 term monomial, 2 terms binomial, 3 terms trinomial if you are meaning quadratic.. (its a polynomial of degree 2) It seems you are getting confused

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

quintuplets = 5 babies

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i am getting a little confused.. math has always been a complicated subject for me.. then I have the ACT that I will be taking in June... I have to learn this stuff!
