Hi all, How to enter the game development as a game programmer and which side I should go on : Computer Science , Software Engineering or Computer Engineering?
Game Development has many branches, e.g. Programming, Graphics, 2D and 3D Rendering, 2D/3D animation, Sound etc. In which line do you want to go?
Computer Science
Well, I'm currently attending Rochester Institute of Technology as a Game Design and Development major. Game design has become more popular as a major recently, so try to find a college with the specifics. If you cant, the next best thing is probably computer science.
Thanks all, I want to become a programmer and there is no game design schools in my country ... do you recommend any online?
Don't go to a game design school, go to the university with the best CS program you can get into/afford/etc. Join the game design club (if there is one), program games on the side.
Thanks! another question please : can I learn game programming from books and online without a degree in CS and what is the advantages and disadvantages?
Sure. The main reason to go to college is to get the degree. A computer science degree will help you get jobs in or out of the game industry. If you just want to program games, there are lots of good online resources. The disadvantages are that you don't have a degree and you won't have lectures or assignments so you will have to manage your own learning process.
That made me happy because in my country there is no game companies yet (only individuals) and me and my friend are going to start an individual team so I won't need a degree :) Any kick-start advises?
