Through the eyes of the narrator, the new Mrs. de Winter, the first Mrs. de Winter Rebecca is glorified throughout the novel as a beautiful clever, sexy ideal woman whose presence even in death is constantly felt by the new Mrs. de Winter, who is wracked with insecurities about her own attractiveness to her huband, Max de Winter - she is certain Max is still in love with Rebecca. Ironically, it is revealed that Max hated Rebecca, who was actually a cruel, callous, selfish woman who was involved in an affair with her first cousin, Jack Favell, one of many affairs during her marriage to Max.

It's a great book by Daphne du Maurier - and you can get the movie to help you out. It was directed by Alfred Hitchwingspan & won Best Picture in 1941 - it's good, but the book really is better.
