What is a square root?

Parth (parthkohli):

Square root is the inverse/opposite of a square of a number.

Parth (parthkohli):

\(\Large \color{MidnightBlue}{\Rightarrow x^2 }\) This is x-squared. \(\Large \color{MidnightBlue}{\Rightarrow \sqrt{x} \text{ or } x^{1 \over 2} }\) This is the square root.

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

okay very well. square root of a no. is that no which multiplied by itself gives the original no. complicated? if i have a no. 'n' suppose, then 'a' is sqrt of 'n' is a^2 = n for eg, sqrt of 4 is 2. because 2^2 = 4. also, '-2' is a sqrt of 4 because (-2)62, that (-2 * -2) is also 4. helps?

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

**if a^2 = n

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes so much! Thank you both of you!

Parth (parthkohli):

As doubling a number is the opposite of making the number half, the same happens with exponents.

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

**(-2)'^'6 - sorry for the typos, and welcome.

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Parth has stated a very good analogy between square roots and multiplication.
