Absolute value or modulus, as you may have heard, is the value of a no. sans its sign - rather like the way Myin described it above - its 'distance' from the '0' point. absolute value is NEVER negative. it is just the numerical part - so basically you can say that it's positive - or rather non-negative (since '0' is neither -ve nor +ve) ALWAYS. it's represented by the no. written between two vertical bars, like |-5| means modulus of '-5', which is 5. |6| will be '6' itself. (Do not confuse this with multiplicative inverse.)
