answer your question "can you take the square root of 40"? Write 40 as the product of two numbers, one of which is the greatest perfect square (4, 9, 16, 25, etc) factor of 40 then split into two radicals and simplify the perfect square part: √40 = √(4 • 10) = √4 • √10 = 2√10
