Ok so system of equations? Which mmethod makes the most sense to you?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x= -4 y=-3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
use either substitution or elimination to solve
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Whichevr you find easier
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Elimination is usually easiest, so you would want to multiply the first equation by -4 so you can eliminate the x and solve for y

how do you know when to use each one?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
after finding y, plug it in to one of the original equations and solve for x
OpenStudy (anonymous):
\[4x-y=-14 \rightarrow 4x+14=y \]
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So \[x-3(4x+14)=2\]
OpenStudy (anonymous):
\[x-12x-42=2\]

x=-4
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Plug -4 back into x-3y-2
OpenStudy (anonymous):
youll get y=-3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
@Bitmaximus
when I used elimination I got y as -2 not -3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ya soz -4-3y=2 -> -3y =6 y=-2

why were you getting -3?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
6/3 = 3 of course
OpenStudy (anonymous):
-_-
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I hope you are being sarcastic...

:P

yes ridiculing myself
OpenStudy (anonymous):
thank you for your help
OpenStudy (anonymous):
can you always use elimination?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yup you can always use all methods
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Some will be easier with certain systems

OpenStudy (anonymous):
So what is your final answer? My answer is (-3,-7)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
(-4,-2)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ive been working on this all day and i still dont understand!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok stay on here ill explain fully

This is simple, stop me if youre not understanding
OpenStudy (anonymous):
K?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
helllllo?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Im willing to explain this thouroughly to you
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yes pleaseeeee, sorry my ipod is slow

haha but ur here now?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yes
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x-3y=2 4x-y=-14 ok lets start from scratch again
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Its tempermental
OpenStudy (anonymous):
My favourite thing to do is screw elimination and do things with substitution always so thats how ill teach you k?

Ok
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok so for substitution what we need is at least of of the equations to be like x=something (to have x isolated) or y for that matter
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Follow?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yes
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x-3y=2 Isolate x (add 3y on both sides) -> x=2+3y
4x-y=-14

k?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Then we now know x is also 2+3y
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yes im follow. I may not be able to respond but i can see what you write.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
4x-y=-14 so using this equation make x equal to (2+3y) -> 4(2+3y)-y=-14
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Now we solve for y (distribute the 4 inside the brackets) 8+12y-y=-14

OpenStudy (anonymous):
simplify 8+11y=-14 -> 11y=-22 -> y=-2
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Now that we have y=-2 we can solfe for x (x=2+3y) -> x=2+3(-2) -> x=-4
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So the point of intersection is (-4,-2)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Do you get it now?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Im processing it

are you good or no?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yes I think I get it now. Math isn't my best or favorite subject and I have finals this week! :/ Your smarticles! Are you a kid? Thank you so much for sharing your brain!

Im 20 heading into uni double major in math and education
