please help with rational expressions!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[1/t-2 = t/8\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac1t-2=\frac{t}8\]\[\frac8{8t}-\frac{16t}{8t}-\frac{t^2}{8t}=0\]\[\frac{8-16t-t^2}{8t}=0\] Is this what you meant? Sorry, I didn't really get what you meant with rational expressions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no sorry i shouldve put the t-2 in parentheses... i don't know how to make fractions on here but the equation is 1/(t-2) = t/8 .... the problem is to solve to find t

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, gotcha. Do you want to try solving it yourself, or do you want the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have homework with a lot of questions like this so i would like to know how to solve it please :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what you have is\[\frac1{t-2}=\frac{t}8\]What I would do first is get rid of the fraction and cross multiply.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

soo how would i do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll give you a general form and you try following it. If:\[\frac{a}b=\frac{c}d\]Then\[a*d=c*b\]So what you're doing is multiplying both sides by d, then multiplying both sides by b (basically by the denominators) In more steps: \[\frac{a}b=\frac{c}d\]\[\frac{a}b*d=\frac{c}d*d\]the d's on the right cancel each other out.\[\frac{ad}b=c\]\[\frac{ad}b*b=c*b\]Now the b's on the left cancel each other out.\[a*d=c*b\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh ok i think i know what you mean... lemme just do this on paper for the question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so id be left with \[8 = t^{2}\] ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i mean \[8 = t^{2} - 2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Almost. It's 8 = t(t-2) which is 8 = t²-2t. Don't forget that you're multiplying t with everything in the brackets.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh ok yeah that makes sense.. so now what do i do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So now if you bring everything to 0ne side you have a quadratic equation.\[t^2-2t-8=0\]Do you know how to solve quadratic equations? Have you done this before in class? May I also ask which grade you are in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm in 9th grade and yes i do now how to do that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok good, so just solve for t and you got it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh ok well thank you so much! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem :) Glad I could help.
