What is complementary in math terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

geometry right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think @helpmenowplease

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok in angle measurement you have two main points 90 degrees and 180 degrees complementary means that those two or more angles will add up to 90 degrees

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and supplementary will add up to 180

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you have an actual problem assigned to you that might help you also if i walk you through it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@cutecats

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh that would be great @helpmenowplease

OpenStudy (anonymous):

brb

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@helpmenowplease

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hello?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@helpmenowplease

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im here agian @cutecats

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok wait 1 sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm here @helpmenowplease

OpenStudy (anonymous):

post the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Find the probability of each event then describe the complementary event of each event.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

from 1-30

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1. P (12) 2. P (odd) 3. P (digit ) 4. P (integer) 5. P (less than 1) 6. P (greater that 18)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

...ok i honestly have no idea what this is talking about @dpaInc @milliex51 Any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean by "this"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this problem when cutecats said complementary i thought she was meaning the geometry term, an i have no idea what to do with this problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

complementary event is like the "opposite" event

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

complementary angles add up to 90 degrees, supplementary = 180 degrees

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1. P (-12) 2. P (even) 3. P (letter ) 4. P (non integer (any fraction)) 5. P (greater than 1) 6. P (less that 18)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@cutecats , those are probability questions you posed... what is the context for those questions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Just to clear things up, complementary has two basic meanings in math In geometry, two angles are complementary when they add to 90 degrees. Ex: a 30 degree and a 60 degree angle are complementary angles since 30+60 = 90 In probability, two events are complementary when their probabilities add to 1 Ex: the events of flipping heads and tails have probabilities of 1/2 and 1/2. So they are complementary events since 1/2 + 1/2 = 1
