PERCENTS: if you went to the store to buy a sweater marked $70, and it was on a 40% off rack, how much is the sweater before tax?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't understand what you mean by '40% off rack'.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ignore that part, just mulitply $70 by 40% or 70 x 0.4 Then you subtract your product from 70 and there is your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there's another question that goes along with this problem how much much after a 7% sales tax is added on?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well here's what its gonna look like, okay $70 x 40% = s 70 - s = q and then q x 7% = d q + d = final answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no not really im a slow learner step by step for me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, multiply 70 by 0.4 on a calculator

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you should get 28 as your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then subtract 28 from 70 and you'll get 42

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now your sweater in $42 but your not done yet. Now we have to add tax, now multiply 42 by 0.7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got $29.4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right now add that to 42 and that is your answer. you'll find the sweater is actually more money lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dang thats to much for a sweater thank you for help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah it is, your welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hey, i sent you a message, but i got my decimal point mixed up, its .07 instead of .7. your answer is really 44.94. sorry! :)
