19+(-6)=

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Basically its 19-6 So that leaves you with 13

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Draw yourself a number line. Mark out 0 to 19. Now start at 19, step back 6 steps, where do you get to?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

WHy is it 19 + (-6)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

19+(-6) is another way of saying 19-6

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Because +1 is like a step in the positive direction, to the right on the number line. And -1 is a step to the left, in the negative direction. Hence 19 + (-1) = 19 - 1 and generalizing 19 + (-anything) = 19 - anything

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How come it is a +(-6) though? Do you know what I mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I see what you are saying @Jamesj
