Are particles colliding with one another an example of a harmonic motion?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

simple harmonic motion is a type of periodic motion where the restoring force is directly proportional to the displacement So any particle colliding which satisfies the above condition represents harmonic motion. So generally, particles colliding with one is not an example of a harmonic motion unless they collide elastically and in ideal conditions
