Simplify the sum. (2u^3 + 6u^2 + 3) + (2u^3 – 7u + 6) Can someone please show me the steps.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

get rid of the parenthesiss and combine like terms: 2u^3 + 2u^3 3 + 6 are the only like terms you need to combine. now write out the whole sum including the ones that didn't have other like terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do I add the "to the power" numbers as well, or does that remain a 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no.... that's what makes them "like" terms. so DO NOT add the exponents.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what's the answer you got?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you. ... I got ...4u^3 + 6u^2 – 7u + 9 is that right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good work!!! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awesome! Thank you so much for your help. You explained it very well! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):
