how do i post a square root symbol in my question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sqrt - number

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

type "sqrt(3)" to mean \[\Large \sqrt{3}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sqrt - 49a^2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so \[\Large \sqrt{49a^2}\] ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sqrt(49a^2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You can write 49 as 7^2. So 49a^2 = 7^2a^2 = (7a)^2 This means 49a^2 = (7a)^2 Do you see what to do next?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no im still learning these can u help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sqrt(x)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The square root will undo the square. So effectively the two cancel out. This means that the square root of (7a)^2 is 7a So \[\Large \sqrt{(7a)^2} = 7a\] So \[\Large \sqrt{49a^2} = 7a\] This is assuming that 'a' is nonnegative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my bad i typed it wrong its 49a^4

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Then 49a^4 = (7a^2)^2 So \[\Large \sqrt{(7a^2)^2} = 7a^2\] and \[\Large \sqrt{49a^4} = 7a^2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k thanks :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yw

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got like 2-3 more questions would u mind helping?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure, just post a new question to the left
