Diabetes- genetic, environment, life style or both, which one should we blame?
@lanre... genetic 'cause it can be inherited...environment 'cause we're living in a competitive world hence stressed environment.. and lifestyle due to the our sedentary lifestyle and consumption of foods which have high fat content.. we are prone to diabetes.. All of these can actually lead to diabetes..
Kayne, if we talk about environment, what if toxic substances destroy the pancreas that produce insulin? Cant it lead to diabetes. This is just an hypothesis.
@lanre..so, you're referring to the internal environment of the body.. I think that any substances which hinder the good functioning of the pancreas in terms of the secretion of insulin will definitely lead to diabetes mellitus as due to lack of insulin, the blood sugar level will remain high,..
kayne, I mean if for instance someone is living around a badly polluting industries, cant the toxic substances from the industries destroy the pancreas and trigger diabetes.
kayne, Genetic, as any gene being linked to diabetes.
Go to this link: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/10011.php You will find the problems associated with the pancreas with simple explanation on the topic. As for as the genetic aspect is concerned, it's linked to the DNA polymorphism on human chromosome 20q according to this paper: http://www.pnas.org/content/88/4/1484.full.pdf
Reason with the first question on the environment.
Sorry.. well, I think that toxic substances due to pollution could lead to problems like cancer.. or maybe inflammation of the pancreas.. it all depends on the toxic substances being inhaled or ingested.. maybe it's impact will depend on it's toxicity, persistence and rate of absorption by the body..and all of this will determine how it will get to the pancreas and the way it's gonna affect that particular organ..
Kayne, thanks for the discussion.
you're welcome @lanre :)
