can anyone explain to me ratios?
a ratio is a fraction....
say for example if i have 3 books and you have 6...then the ratio of my no of books to yours is 3:6 or 3/6 or 1/2
why 6:12?
It is used to describe a fraction.
rehana pays $284 in tax. this is 2/9 of the money she earns, how much money does rehana have?
...
She has $1278 in total
how did u get it?
I did it by forming an equation
Look first of all the ratio is 2:7. Lets have x be the total. 2+7=9 so 2/9 multiply the x will give you 284. x= 284 divided by 2/9 which will give you 1278. You can check it by multiplying 2/9 by 1278 which will give you 284.
aha
Did you understand??
kind of
It is very related to fractions, but I don't think that that is the best way to think of ratios. Instead, think of how two quantities are related to each other. So, for example, if I'm asking about the ratio at a party, I'm thinking about how two quantities are related. Which two quantities might I be thinking of? Well, I'm a creep, so I'm thinking of number of guys and number of girls. A party with a good girl:guy ratio has a lot of girls COMPARED TO the number of guys. Now it's important to understand that I'm not purely talking about the number of girls. A party with a lot of girls could have a good ratio, or it could have a bad ratio, depending on the number of guys there.
10 girls is good if there are 2 guys, but 10 girls is bad if there are 30 guys.
yeah
Another example of a ratio is GAS MILAGE. Again, we're comparing two quantities. So what two quantities would we be comparing in this case? Well, we're comparing miles traveled and gallons of gas burned. Traveling 30 miles could be good, if I only burned 1 gallon to do it. That would be a ratio of 30:1, or 30 miles per gallon. Or, traveling 30 miles could be bad, if I burned 10 gallons to do it. That would be a ratio of 30:10, or 3:1, which is 3 miles per gallon.
Now, think about making lemonade, and see if you can explain to me how ratios would be important in making delicious lemonade.
i dont get it :/
do you mean ratio of lemon juice to water when making lemonade for example?
Yes, very good =)
I probably would have though of the ratio of lemons to sugar, but lemon juice to water is important also.
@sarah can i join the explnation
sure :)
A ratio is a comparison of 2 quantities
6 lemons :1 cup white sugar: and 6 cups cold water does that make sense? :P
Which is stronger? A cup of lemonade that used 3 lemons, or a cup of lemonade that used 6 lemons?
6 lemons
Now, what if I told you that I used these cups: |dw:1338043724552:dw|
@SmoothMath i suggest u give her an easy one
a cup of lemonade that used 6 lemons is stronger?
The answer is, it depends.
how?
okay sarah i will explain ratio
-_-
:P
Okaybye. Do your thing, Razor.
smooth math i wana say something :P
Razor, you're repeating things she's been told already. Let her follow a single path of logic, rather than 3 at once.
how about a probelm
I agree with SmoothMath
guys im confused :S
Well, naturally. You now have 2 teachers. 2 People trying to steer your car.
lol omg. Please just ignore Razor.
idk who to listen to but ok complete
Sarah, imagine making some lemonade. You sit down, and you put 3 lemons in, and you take a sip. It's a bit strong. What do you do next?
okay i am out
add some sugar?
Let's ignore sugar for now =)
ok :)
Imagine it's kool-aid lemonade. There's only 2 ingredients. Water and koolaid mix.
add water?
Okay, so you put in some water, and you put in 3 packs of koolaid mix. It's too strong. So you add water. Exactly.
yeah
So you haven't changed the amount of koolaid mix at all, but the drink has gotten less strong. What changed? The ratio.
So think about making koolaid and you mix 1 gallon of water and 3 packs and you really think that tastes perfect, but you are having a party, so you need 3 gallons. How do you manage to make 3 gallons of koolaid that tastes the same?
um..you add 3 packs of koolaid in each gallon..i guess
Great! So if I use 3 gallons of water, how many packets total?
