how wud u rtie this in an algebraic equation 8 less then a number times 3

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

8 less than (a number times 3) or (8 less than a number) times 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in a algerbraic expression

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

I know. It is just that I'm not sure which interpretation is correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need to no if u rite it like 8-3n or 3n-8

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

The first would be \[3x-8\]The second would be\[3(x-8)\]Less than implies subtraction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but which one i wirte correctly \[3x-8 or 8-3x\]

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

The first expression you wrote implies that you are looking at a number which is 8 less than three times the number. The second implies you are looking at a number 3x less than the number 8. What do you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so it wud be da first one since imm lookin for 8 less then a number times 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thx :)

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

You're welcome.
